Accredited training and supervision – Salisbury District Hospital (NHS)

Salisbury District Hospital continues to be committed on creating a strong culture of coaching, and had developed an internal coaching service which had proven to be very popular. This internal coaching service was made up of senior clinical and non-clinical staff, and had been effective in reducing absenteeism, resolving conflicts, developing confidence and career planning.

The coaching service needed to grow in order to meet the needs of a growing talent pool, and others who wished to use the service. There was a clear need to grow the internal coaching service for several reasons.

– To extend the opportunity to provide coaching to all staff who wanted and needed this level of support
– To provide intensive coaching for alumni within a management talent pool
– Growing the coaching service provided development opportunities for those within it
–  Greater understanding of the positive impact coaching was bringing to this organisation

The action:
After close consultation, Continuum Coaching was commissioned to deliver an accredited coaching skills programme. This programme, Coaching for Performance met the standards of ILM level 5 in Coaching and Mentoring, and was made up of 6 classroom training days spread over 12 months. The content covered the core skills of coaching, with a strong emphasis on the GROW model, and offered a raft of additional coaching tools and techniques.

Participants were expected to compile a Coaching Journal made up of a portfolio of practice coaching sessions with feedback from their coachees. Each participant also received observation sessions carried out by member of the existing coaching service.

Continuum Coaching provided supervision to the all whole coaching service to ensure standards were upheld and remained consistent.

The result:
The quality and standard of this training was viewed by participants and the sponsor as exemplary. The participant feedback was very positive and exceeded expectations.

New coaches could demonstrate high levels of skill and were a seamless addition to the internal service. Also all the new coaches had ongoing had line management responsibilities. As a result of this training all newly trained coaches felt they were able to manage their staff far more effectively.

The sponsor commended Continuum Coaching for high quality administration, and the focus placed on the relationships with the Learning and Development team.

“The coaching service is now seen by the Trust’s board as having a demonstrable impact on employee satisfaction and engagement. The resolution of many HR cases were also attributed to the service”. Head of Learning & Development

I thought that the course was excellent and well presented you really taught me a lot about myself and the way I deal with my staff. Not only has this course given me a change to grow as a coach but also as a leader on the ward and how I deal with my staff. The teaching sessions where excellent and held at a pace that I could manage.
